Statutory redundancy pay is worked out on a week's pay capped at £751. That is why the statutory figure is a floor rather than a valuation, and why the gap is different in every city.

£727.40 a week · £37,241 a year
Bournemouth residents

Statutory weekly cap, 2026/27

Against the cap: the cap sits £23.60 above the typical local week, so for most people here it does not reduce the calculation at all.

One caution. HMCTS publishes receipts for a region it calls South West, but it no longer publishes which hearing venue belongs to which administrative region — the GOV.UK guidance page that used to list them now redirects to the court finder, and the 2013 Regulations create no regional structure at all. So this is the region of the same geographical name, not a mapping we can show you a source for. Why we say so rather than rounding it off.

Heard at the Southampton Courts of Justice

Bournemouth has no employment tribunal venue of its own. The nearest the HMCTS court finder returns is the Southampton Combined Court Centre on London Road, about twenty-four miles away, with Havant Justice Centre next at nearly forty. The Southampton building is a Crown, County and Family Court, open from 8:30am, with counter service by appointment, council car parks within ten minutes’ walk and a café on the ground floor; the full listing is on the Southampton page.

Where a Bournemouth case is actually listed will be on the notice of hearing. If a short hearing would otherwise mean a day travelling, ask early whether it can be attended by video; HMCTS lists video facilities at the Southampton building.

Bournemouth is in the South West and Southampton in the South East. HMCTS does not publish which venue sits in which administrative region, so the caseload on this page is the South West region’s, the one of the same geographical name — a reasonable reading, not a documented one.

Same venue as Southampton, the other side of the cap

The median full-time job in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole pays £727 a week; in Southampton it is £782. The statutory weekly cap of £751 sits between them. A typical Southampton week is trimmed before the redundancy formula starts; a typical Bournemouth week is used in full.

Bournemouth residents earn £729, within a couple of pounds of the job figure, so it hardly matters which local median you use; it is your own pay that counts. Southampton is the opposite case, with jobs paying well above what residents earn.

Below the cap, the argument that the statute has short-changed you is not available for a typical earner; the case for a better settlement rests on the claim — how the selection was made, whether a grievance is on file, whether anything takes the case outside the unfair dismissal cap. How selection should work.

The numbers on local pay

For a 45-year-old with ten complete years, statutory redundancy on the local median is £8,729 — twelve full weeks, nothing removed by the cap. In Southampton the same person on the local median would get £9,012, not twelve weeks of actual pay.

For unfair dismissal, fifty-two weeks’ pay on the Bournemouth figure is about £37,825, the practical ceiling on the compensatory award until 1 January 2027. How the limits work.

Since 1 October 2026, an unfair dismissal claim has six months from the effective date of termination where that date is on or after it. Settlement talks do not pause it; only Acas early conciliation does. How to count it.

The £30,000 tax threshold covers more months of Bournemouth pay than of Southampton pay, so a settlement of the same size goes further here. How the threshold works.

Local pay sits under the statutory weekly cap, so the redundancy formula uses a typical local week in full. What a tribunal could award · the time limit.

Common questions about Bournemouth

Is there an employment tribunal in Bournemouth?

HMCTS lists none in the town. The nearest employment venue its court finder returns is the Southampton Combined Court Centre, The Courts of Justice, London Road, Southampton SO15 2XQ.

Is there parking at the Southampton court?

HMCTS lists two council car parks within a ten-minute walk; disabled parking has to be arranged before the visit.

Is Bournemouth pay above the statutory redundancy cap?

No. The median full-time job in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole is a little below it (ONS Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings 2025).

Do I need a Bournemouth employment solicitor?

No. Any qualified lawyer insured for the advice and unconnected to your employer can sign off a settlement agreement — section 203(3A) and (3B) of the Employment Rights Act 1996.

How long do I have to claim?

Six months from the effective date of termination where that date is on or after 1 October 2026; three months where it was earlier. Acas early conciliation comes first.

Get your agreement checked

Six quick questions. Your details are the last step, never the first.

Step 1 of 6
Where are you up to?

A solicitor needs to know whether there is a document to read yet.

What do you want out of this?

There is no wrong answer. It decides whether a firm books you a sign-off slot or opens a negotiation, and those are different pieces of work.

When have you been asked to sign by?

The Acas Code of Practice recommends at least 10 days. If you have been given less, that is worth a solicitor knowing before anything else.

How long have you worked there?

Length of service decides your statutory notice, whether statutory redundancy pay applies, and whether ordinary unfair dismissal is available to you at all.

Is your employer paying towards the legal advice?

Employers usually contribute, because the agreement is not valid without independent advice. They are not obliged to. Knowing the figure up front stops you being put in front of a firm whose fee does not fit it.

Where should the firm reach you?

This is the only step that asks for personal details.
