Milton Keynes has no employment tribunal of its own — the nearest venue HMCTS returns is in Bedford — and it is the city on this site where residents out-earn local jobs by the widest margin.

Milton Keynes median weekly pay against the statutory cap Two horizontal bars. The upper bar is median full-time gross weekly pay for jobs located in Milton Keynes, £798.60. The lower bar is the same measure for Milton Keynes residents, £817.70. A dashed line marks the statutory weekly cap of £751. Statutory redundancy pay is worked out on a week's pay capped at £751. That is why the statutory figure is a floor rather than a valuation, and why the gap is different in every city.

One caution. HMCTS publishes receipts for a region it calls South East, but it no longer publishes which hearing venue belongs to which administrative region — the GOV.UK guidance page that used to list them now redirects to the court finder, and the 2013 Regulations create no regional structure at all. So this is the region of the same geographical name, not a mapping we can show you a source for. Why we say so rather than rounding it off.

No tribunal in town

Milton Keynes is the only city on this site without an employment tribunal venue of its own. Ask the HMCTS court finder for employment venues near central Milton Keynes and it returns the Bedford Tribunal Hearing Centre, on Howard Street, first, and the Watford Tribunal Hearing Centre second, about thirty miles away.

Bedford is a tribunal building rather than a combined court: HMCTS lists it for employment and social security only, open 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday, with level access to all floors and lifts. It lists a children’s waiting room, with the note that children are not to be left unattended, and says nothing about parking.

Where your case is actually heard will be on the notice of hearing. Until then, the distance is one more reason the statutory sign-off on a settlement agreement is done remotely.

Residents earn more than the jobs pay

Milton Keynes has the widest gap on this site in the unusual direction: the median full-time resident earns more than the median full-time job located in the town. Sheffield is the only other city here where residents out-earn local jobs at all, and by less.

The figures do not say where those residents work, only that as a group they are the higher earners. For a settlement, the rule is simple: describe your loss with the pay attached to the job you are leaving. If that job was in London, the Milton Keynes job median is not your number.

Above the cap, and above the South East

The median full-time job located in Milton Keynes pays more than the statutory weekly cap, and more than the South East median. So the statutory redundancy formula trims a typical local week before it starts, and the resident median, being higher again, is trimmed further.

Treat the statutory figure as a floor, not a valuation. The more your weekly pay exceeds the cap, the larger the share of your real loss that has to be recovered through the negotiated part of the settlement rather than the statutory part. What actually moves that figure.

The same pay level changes the tax picture. The £30,000 threshold in section 403 of the Income Tax (Earnings and Pensions) Act 2003 is a flat national figure, so measured in months of median local pay it covers less runway in Milton Keynes than in any city on this site where pay sits under the cap — more than a month less than in Nottingham. A settlement that would stay wholly under the threshold on East Midlands wages may not do so here, which makes the split between notice pay and compensation worth checking line by line. How the threshold works.

For an unfair dismissal claim the pattern is the same as elsewhere: the compensatory award is capped at the lower of a fixed sum and fifty-two weeks’ pay, and on Milton Keynes earnings the fifty-two weeks is still the lower figure, so a year’s gross pay is the realistic ceiling. How the two limits interact.

Common questions about Milton Keynes

Is there an employment tribunal in Milton Keynes?

HMCTS lists none in the town. The nearest employment venue its court finder returns for central Milton Keynes is the Bedford Tribunal Hearing Centre, 8-10 Howard Street, Bedford MK40 3HS, open 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday.

Could my hearing be in Watford instead?

Possibly. Watford Tribunal Hearing Centre is the second employment venue the finder returns. HMCTS does not publish which cases go to which venue; the notice of hearing names it.

Do I need a Milton Keynes employment solicitor?

No. The adviser has to be qualified, insured for the advice and unconnected to your employer — section 203(3A) and (3B) of the Employment Rights Act 1996 — but can be anywhere in England and Wales. The sign-off is routinely done by phone and email.

Milton Keynes pay is above the statutory cap. What does that mean?

That the statutory redundancy calculation discards part of a typical local week before it begins. The statutory figure is a floor; the negotiation is about the compensation on top.

I live in Milton Keynes but work in London. Which pay figure is mine?

Your own, and it is the job's location that matters, not your home's. Local medians are useful for context; your loss is measured on what the job you are leaving actually paid.

Get your agreement checked

Six quick questions. Your details are the last step, never the first.

Step 1 of 6
Where are you up to?

A solicitor needs to know whether there is a document to read yet.

What do you want out of this?

There is no wrong answer. It decides whether a firm books you a sign-off slot or opens a negotiation, and those are different pieces of work.

When have you been asked to sign by?

The Acas Code of Practice recommends at least 10 days. If you have been given less, that is worth a solicitor knowing before anything else.

How long have you worked there?

Length of service decides your statutory notice, whether statutory redundancy pay applies, and whether ordinary unfair dismissal is available to you at all.

Is your employer paying towards the legal advice?

Employers usually contribute, because the agreement is not valid without independent advice. They are not obliged to. Knowing the figure up front stops you being put in front of a firm whose fee does not fit it.

Where should the firm reach you?

This is the only step that asks for personal details.
