Brighton’s nearest employment venue is a tribunal building in Havant, nearly thirty-seven miles away — and Brighton pay sits almost exactly on the statutory weekly cap, a few pounds above it.

Brighton median weekly pay against the statutory cap Two horizontal bars. The upper bar is median full-time gross weekly pay for jobs located in Brighton, £755.20. The lower bar is the same measure for Brighton residents, £765.50. A dashed line marks the statutory weekly cap of £751. Statutory redundancy pay is worked out on a week's pay capped at £751. That is why the statutory figure is a floor rather than a valuation, and why the gap is different in every city.

One caution. HMCTS publishes receipts for a region it calls South East, but it no longer publishes which hearing venue belongs to which administrative region — the GOV.UK guidance page that used to list them now redirects to the court finder, and the 2013 Regulations create no regional structure at all. So this is the region of the same geographical name, not a mapping we can show you a source for. Why we say so rather than rounding it off.

Havant or Croydon

Brighton has no employment tribunal venue of its own, and the nearest ones are not near. The HMCTS court finder returns Havant Justice Centre on Elmleigh Road, nearly thirty-seven miles west, and Croydon Employment Tribunal, about thirty-eight miles north, almost level with it.

Havant is a tribunal building listed for employment and social security only, open 9am to 5pm Monday to Thursday and until 4:30pm on Fridays, with portable hearing loops and level access to every floor. Croydon is London South, part of the London tribunal system. The Croydon venue. Which one hears a Brighton case will be on the notice of hearing.

At that distance, the request worth making early is for a short preliminary hearing to be held remotely. It costs nothing to ask, and a day’s travel is part of what saying no to an offer costs you.

HMCTS does not publish which venue sits in which administrative region; the caseload on this page is the South East region’s, the one of the same geographical name, a reasonable reading rather than a documented one. If the case is listed at Croydon, the London region’s queue is the relevant one instead.

Right on the cap

The median full-time job located in Brighton and Hove pays £755 a week, a few pounds above the statutory weekly cap of £751. That is closer to the line than any other city on this site: Leeds sits just below it at £741, Birmingham just above at £761.

In practice the cap barely touches a typical Brighton week. Whether it touches yours depends on your own pay, which is why the calculator asks for it. Brighton residents earn a little more than Brighton jobs pay, £766, so a resident commuting out to a better-paid job is more likely to be above the line.

Brighton jobs also pay less than the South East median, which is a fact worth having if an offer has been benchmarked against regional pay. Run your own figures.

Three cities on the line

Because three cities on this site sit so close to the cap, they show what the cap actually does at the margin. On the same statutory formula a 45-year-old with ten complete years on the local median is owed £9,012 in Brighton, £8,894 in Leeds and £9,012 in Birmingham — within a couple of hundred pounds of each other, because the cap holds the two above it to the same capped week.

That is the point at which the statutory figure stops being an argument either way, and the negotiation rests entirely on the claim. What moves an offer.

The tribunal clock changed on 1 October 2026: an unfair dismissal claim now has six months from the effective date of termination where that date is on or after it, paused only by Acas early conciliation. Counting it.

Common questions about Brighton

Is there an employment tribunal in Brighton?

HMCTS lists none in the city. The nearest employment venue its court finder returns for central Brighton is Havant Justice Centre, The Court House, Elmleigh Road, Havant PO9 2AL, with Croydon Employment Tribunal almost as close.

Is Brighton pay above the statutory redundancy cap?

Only just. The median full-time job located in Brighton and Hove is a few pounds a week above it (ONS Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings 2025).

Can I attend a hearing remotely?

Ask the tribunal. It decides how a hearing is held; asking early, with travel distance as the reason, is reasonable.

Do I need a Brighton employment solicitor?

No. Any qualified lawyer insured for the advice and unconnected to your employer can sign off a settlement agreement — section 203(3A) and (3B) of the Employment Rights Act 1996.

How long do I have to claim?

Six months from the effective date of termination where that date is on or after 1 October 2026; three months where it was earlier. Acas early conciliation comes first.

Get your agreement checked

Six quick questions. Your details are the last step, never the first.

Step 1 of 6
Where are you up to?

A solicitor needs to know whether there is a document to read yet.

What do you want out of this?

There is no wrong answer. It decides whether a firm books you a sign-off slot or opens a negotiation, and those are different pieces of work.

When have you been asked to sign by?

The Acas Code of Practice recommends at least 10 days. If you have been given less, that is worth a solicitor knowing before anything else.

How long have you worked there?

Length of service decides your statutory notice, whether statutory redundancy pay applies, and whether ordinary unfair dismissal is available to you at all.

Is your employer paying towards the legal advice?

Employers usually contribute, because the agreement is not valid without independent advice. They are not obliged to. Knowing the figure up front stops you being put in front of a firm whose fee does not fit it.

Where should the firm reach you?

This is the only step that asks for personal details.
