- United Kingdom
- £766.60 a week
- Statutory weekly cap, 2026/27

How busy the tribunal is
Employment tribunal receipts, South East region, April to June 2026
- Single claims received
- 2,048 — 18.3% of the national total, 2nd of eight regions
- Jurisdictional complaints
- 4,478, an average of 2.19 per claim
- National, same quarter
- 11,202 claims carrying 25,122 complaints
- National open caseload
- 100,338, against 11,232 disposals in the quarter
One caution. HMCTS publishes receipts for a region it calls South East, but it no longer publishes which hearing venue belongs to which administrative region — the GOV.UK guidance page that used to list them now redirects to the court finder, and the 2013 Regulations create no regional structure at all. So this is the region of the same geographical name, not a mapping we can show you a source for. Why we say so rather than rounding it off.

An employment claim at the Courts of Justice
Southampton’s employment claims are heard at the Southampton Combined Court Centre, the Courts of Justice on London Road. HMCTS lists it as a Crown Court, a County Court and a Family Court across fourteen areas of law, employment and crime among them. It is one of two venues on this site that are also Crown Courts; Sheffield is the other.
The listing is unusually practical. The court opens at 8:30am, counter service is by appointment only, and telephone enquiries are answered 9am to 5pm. There is a café on the ground floor, open in the morning and over lunch. Loop hearing facilities are listed for all court and hearing rooms.
Unlike most venues here, it lists parking: two council car parks within a ten-minute walk. Disabled parking exists but has to be arranged before the visit.
Jobs that pay well above what residents earn
The median full-time job located in Southampton pays well above what the median Southampton resident in full-time work earns — a gap in the same range as Bristol’s and London’s. Better-paid Southampton jobs are held to a considerable extent by people who commute in.
If that is you, describe your loss with the job figure, not the home one. And the job figure sits above the statutory weekly cap, so the redundancy formula trims a typical Southampton week before it starts. Treat the statutory amount as a floor.
It also sits above the South East median, which is itself above the UK median. Run your own figures.
Where the money is negotiated
With pay above the cap, more of a typical Southampton loss has to be recovered through the negotiated part of a settlement rather than the statutory part. Three things move that figure: whether a claim exists and how strong it is, whether a grievance is already on the record, and whether a discrimination or whistleblowing element takes the case outside the unfair dismissal cap.
On the tax side, the £30,000 threshold is flat, so it covers fewer months of Southampton pay than of pay in the cities where the cap does not bite. Getting notice pay and compensation into the right lines of the agreement is worth more here than a headline-figure argument. What moves an offer · notice pay and tax.
The median full-time Southampton job pays £782 a week. For statutory redundancy that week is cut back to the cap before anything is multiplied, so a 45-year-old with ten complete years is owed £9,012 rather than twelve weeks of actual pay. For unfair dismissal, fifty-two weeks’ pay on the same wage is about £40,638, the practical ceiling on the compensatory award for a typical local earner.

Is there parking at Southampton Combined Court Centre?

Why is my employment hearing at a Crown Court?
Because HMCTS lists the Southampton Combined Court Centre for fourteen areas of law, including employment and crime. The employment tribunal is the same tribunal wherever it sits.
Do I need a Southampton employment solicitor?
Not a local one. The adviser must be qualified, insured for the advice and not acting for your employer — section 203(3A) and (3B) of the Employment Rights Act 1996. Local knowledge helps with what the alternative to settling looks like, not with the signature.
Southampton pay is above the statutory cap. What does that mean?
That the statutory redundancy calculation discards part of a typical local week before it starts. The statutory figure is a floor; the negotiation is about the compensation on top.
