Colchester’s nearest employment venue is a county court in Bury St Edmunds, twenty-six miles away — and Colchester pay sits closer to the statutory weekly cap than any other city on this site, a couple of pounds above it.

Colchester median weekly pay against the statutory cap Two horizontal bars. The upper bar is median full-time gross weekly pay for jobs located in Colchester, £753.40. The lower bar is the same measure for Colchester residents, £766.60. A dashed line marks the statutory weekly cap of £751. Statutory redundancy pay is worked out on a week's pay capped at £751. That is why the statutory figure is a floor rather than a valuation, and why the gap is different in every city.

A Suffolk county court for an Essex town

The nearest employment venue the HMCTS court finder returns for central Colchester is not in Essex. It is the Bury St Edmunds County Court and Family Court at Triton House, about twenty-six miles north in Suffolk, with the two Cambridge courts next at nearly forty. Ipswich claims are sent to the same building. The Ipswich page.

The Bury building is listed for nine areas of law, open 9am to 4pm, with the counter by appointment. Civil post goes to Norwich, not to Bury, which is worth checking before anything is sent near a deadline. Where a Colchester case is actually listed will be on the notice of hearing.

HMCTS reports caseload for eight regions, none named for the East of England, so this page shows no regional figure rather than guess one.

None of this decides where your adviser has to be. A settlement agreement is signed off by a relevant independent adviser, and the statute cares about their qualification and insurance, not their postcode. The tribunal venue only matters if talks fail and a claim is issued, which is why the Bury listing is a fallback detail on this page rather than its starting point. Acas early conciliation, which must come before any claim, is run nationally and does not depend on which court building a Colchester case would reach.

Same venue as Ipswich, the other side of the cap

The median full-time job located in Colchester pays £753 a week, a couple of pounds above the statutory weekly cap of £751 — nearer the line than any other city on this site. Ipswich, whose claims go to the same Bury court, is £692, well below it.

For a typical Colchester worker that means the cap takes almost nothing off the week; for a typical Ipswich worker it takes nothing at all. The practical difference is small, but it marks where the statute stops being an argument: just above the line, your real loss and the statutory figure diverge only as your own pay rises.

Colchester residents earn £767, a little more than the town’s jobs pay, which is the less common direction on this site; Ipswich’s two figures are almost identical.

What the two Bury cases look like

On the statutory formula, a 45-year-old with ten complete years on the local median is owed £9,012 in Colchester and £8,308 in Ipswich. The gap between the two is the gap in pay, almost untouched by the cap.

For unfair dismissal, fifty-two weeks’ pay on the Colchester median is about £39,177, well under the fixed limit of £123,543, so a year’s pay is the practical ceiling until 1 January 2027. How the limits work.

Colchester pay also sits below the East of England median, and the flat £30,000 tax threshold covers close to nine and a half months of it. How the threshold works.

Ten complete years also earns ten weeks’ statutory notice under section 86 of the Employment Rights Act 1996, which on the Colchester median is about £7,534. Notice pay is taxed like wages whether you work it or are paid in lieu, so it sits outside the £30,000 threshold and should be shown as a separate line in any offer. Check your own notice.

If the dismissal was unfair as well as a redundancy, the basic award is worked out on the same formula and the redundancy payment already made is set against it, so the two are not paid twice. What a claim adds is the compensatory award for lost earnings, which is why the length of time it would take a Colchester worker to find comparable pay is usually the figure that moves an offer most.

Common questions about Colchester

Is there an employment tribunal in Colchester?

HMCTS lists none in the town. The nearest employment venue its court finder returns for central Colchester is the Bury St Edmunds County Court and Family Court, Triton House, St Andrew's Street North, Bury St Edmunds IP33 1TR.

Is Colchester pay above the statutory redundancy cap?

Only just. The median full-time job located in Colchester is a couple of pounds a week above it (ONS Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings 2025).

Where do I send documents?

HMCTS lists the Norwich Combined Court as the address for civil enquiries to the Bury St Edmunds court. Check which address a document must reach before posting it.

Do I need a Colchester employment solicitor?

No. Any qualified lawyer insured for the advice and unconnected to your employer can sign off a settlement agreement — section 203(3A) and (3B) of the Employment Rights Act 1996.

How long do I have to claim?

Six months from the effective date of termination where that date is on or after 1 October 2026; three months where it was earlier. Acas early conciliation comes first.

Send an enquiry

Six quick questions. Your details are the last step, never the first.

Step 1 of 6
Where are you up to?

A solicitor needs to know whether there is a document to read yet.

What do you want out of this?

There is no wrong answer. It decides whether a firm books you a sign-off slot or opens a negotiation, and those are different pieces of work.

When have you been asked to sign by?

The Acas Code of Practice recommends at least 10 days. If you have been given less, that is worth a solicitor knowing before anything else.

How long have you worked there?

Length of service decides your statutory notice, whether statutory redundancy pay applies, and whether ordinary unfair dismissal is available to you at all.

Is your employer paying towards the legal advice?

Employers usually contribute, because the agreement is not valid without independent advice. They are not obliged to. Knowing the figure up front stops you being put in front of a firm whose fee does not fit it.

Where should the firm reach you?

This is the only step that asks for personal details.

By clicking “Send my enquiry” I agree that exitagreement.co.uk may hold the details above and contact me about this enquiry by email, text or phone.
