The Sheffield numbers
Median full-time gross weekly pay, 2025
- Jobs located in Sheffield
- £721.90 a week · £37,074 a year
- Sheffield residents
- £733.00 a week
- United Kingdom
- £766.60 a week
- Statutory weekly cap, 2026/27
- £751, giving a maximum statutory redundancy payment of £22,530
Against the cap: the cap sits £29.10 above the typical local week, so for most people here it does not reduce the calculation at all.

How busy the tribunal is
Employment tribunal receipts, North East region, April to June 2026
- Single claims received
- 821 — 7.3% of the national total, 6th of eight regions
- Jurisdictional complaints
- 1,771, an average of 2.16 per claim
- National, same quarter
- 11,202 claims carrying 25,122 complaints
- National open caseload
- 100,338, against 11,232 disposals in the quarter
One caution. HMCTS publishes receipts for a region it calls North East, but it no longer publishes which hearing venue belongs to which administrative region — the GOV.UK guidance page that used to list them now redirects to the court finder, and the 2013 Regulations create no regional structure at all. So this is the region of the same geographical name, not a mapping we can show you a source for. Why we say so rather than rounding it off.

An employment claim in a Crown Court building
Sheffield’s employment claims are heard at the Sheffield Combined Court Centre, the Law Courts on West Bar. HMCTS lists it as a Crown Court, a County Court and a Family Court across fifteen areas of law. Employment is one of them; crime is another.
That has practical consequences on a hearing day. The building runs three counters on different hours: County Court counter service is by appointment only, at 10am and 2pm, and the Crown Court counter is open 10am to 4pm, inside a building open 9am to 5pm. There is no parking on site; HMCTS points to paid parking within 500 metres at the Galleries or Nelson Street.
It also lists a witness service, video facilities and a portable hearing enhancement system that has to be booked in advance. If you need an adjustment, ask the tribunal early rather than the court office on the day.
Residents out-earn the jobs
In most cities on this site the jobs located in the city pay more than the people who live there earn, because better-paid workers commute in. Sheffield runs the other way. The median Sheffield resident in full-time work earns a little more than the median full-time job located in Sheffield — one of only two cities here where that is true.
If you live in Sheffield and work elsewhere, the local job figure understates your loss, and the right number to use is your own pay. If you work in Sheffield, the median Sheffield job sits under the statutory weekly cap, so the redundancy formula takes a typical local week in full.
Sheffield jobs also pay more than the Yorkshire and The Humber median. That puts Sheffield between Leeds, which sits just under the cap, and the East Midlands cities further south, which sit well under it. Leeds · Nottingham.
What the cap means for an unfair dismissal claim here
Because a typical Sheffield wage sits below the statutory weekly cap, the basic award for unfair dismissal — which uses the same age bands and the same cap as redundancy pay — is calculated on the whole week for most local workers.
The compensatory award is where the money is, and it has a ceiling most people are not told about: the lower of a fixed sum and fifty-two weeks’ pay. On Sheffield earnings the fifty-two weeks is the lower figure by a wide margin, so the practical ceiling is roughly a year’s gross pay however long you are out of work. How the two limits interact.
That is the number an offer is really being measured against — unless the facts include discrimination or whistleblowing, where that ceiling does not apply.

Common questions about Sheffield
Where is the employment tribunal in Sheffield?
Employment claims are heard at the Sheffield Combined Court Centre, The Law Courts, 50 West Bar, Sheffield S3 8PH. HMCTS lists the court as open 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday.
Is there parking at Sheffield Combined Court Centre?
No. HMCTS says there is no parking at the building, and points to paid parking within 500 metres at the Galleries or Nelson Street.
Why is my employment hearing in a Crown Court building?
Because HMCTS lists the Sheffield Combined Court Centre for fifteen areas of law, employment and crime among them. The employment tribunal is the same tribunal wherever it sits; the building is shared.
Do I need a Sheffield employment solicitor for a settlement agreement?
Not a Sheffield one. The statute requires a relevant independent adviser who is insured for the advice and not acting for your employer — section 203(3A) and (3B) of the Employment Rights Act 1996. The sign-off is routinely done by phone and email.
Sheffield pay is under the statutory cap. What does that change?
The statutory redundancy formula uses a typical local week in full, so the argument that the statute has short-changed you is not available to most local earners. The case for a better settlement has to be built from the claim.
