Employment and settlement agreement solicitors in Guildford
Guildford sits almost exactly between two employment tribunals, Reading and Croydon — which one the HMCTS finder lists first depends on the postcode — and Guildford pay sits far above the statutory weekly cap.

The Guildford numbers
Median full-time gross weekly pay, 2025
- Jobs located in Guildford
- £876.80 a week · £45,061 a year
- Guildford residents
- £882.40 a week
- United Kingdom
- £766.60 a week
- Statutory weekly cap, 2026/27

How busy the tribunal is
Employment tribunal receipts, South East region, April to June 2026
- Single claims received
- 2,048 — 18.3% of the national total, 2nd of eight regions
- Jurisdictional complaints
- 4,478, an average of 2.19 per claim
- National, same quarter
- 11,202 claims carrying 25,122 complaints
- National open caseload
- 100,338, against 11,232 disposals in the quarter
One caution. HMCTS publishes receipts for a region it calls South East, but it no longer publishes which hearing venue belongs to which administrative region — the GOV.UK guidance page that used to list them now redirects to the court finder, and the 2013 Regulations create no regional structure at all. So this is the region of the same geographical name, not a mapping we can show you a source for. Why we say so rather than rounding it off.

Reading or Croydon: a tie the postcode decides
Guildford has no employment tribunal of its own, and the two nearest are almost exactly the same distance away. From GU1 4AR the HMCTS court finder lists the Reading Tribunal Hearing Centre first, at about 22.6 miles, with the Croydon Employment Tribunal a fraction behind. From GU1 1HJ, also central, the order flips: Croydon first, Reading second. The Central London Employment Tribunal follows at about twenty-seven miles.
So the finder cannot tell you which tribunal a Guildford case would go to, and HMCTS does not publish which venue takes which postcode. The notice of hearing will say. Reading opens on sitting days only and has its post handled in Watford. Reading · Croydon.
For a settlement none of this matters until talks fail. The adviser who signs the agreement off can be anywhere, and Acas early conciliation does not depend on the venue.
The two tied venues lie in different directions from Guildford, Reading to the north-west and Croydon to the north-east. Neither the finder nor this page can say which one a case from a particular street would reach; asking the tribunal office once a claim is issued is the only way to know before the notice arrives.
Guildford pay and the cap
The median full-time job located in Guildford pays £877 a week, a little more than Cambridge (£876) on ONS figures. Only London and Reading pay more of the places on this site. The median Guildford resident earns £882, a few pounds more than the jobs pay.
Against the statutory weekly cap of £751, that means the formula discards about 14.3% of a typical Guildford week before it starts. That is a smaller share than in Reading (21.3%) or London (21.6%), but well over a hundred pounds a week.
On Guildford pay, the argument that the statutory figure understates your loss is a real one, and it is the usual reason a settlement offer here should be measured against your actual week rather than the statutory column. Because Guildford residents earn a little more than Guildford jobs pay, a resident who commutes out to London may sit higher still, and the cap will take a larger share of their week.
What the cap costs at Guildford pay
For a 45-year-old with ten complete years, statutory redundancy on the capped week is £9,012. On the real median week it would be £10,522: the cap takes about £1,510 off that one calculation.
Notice is not capped. Ten weeks’ statutory notice under section 86 of the Employment Rights Act 1996 is about £8,768, taxed in full. The £30,000 threshold covers fewer than eight months of Guildford median pay, fewer than in most places on this site, so the split between notice and compensation carries more tax here. How the threshold works.
A year of median pay is about £45,594, still under the fixed limit of £123,543 that applies until 1 January 2027. How the limits work.

Common questions about Guildford
Which employment tribunal covers Guildford?
The HMCTS court finder puts the Reading Tribunal Hearing Centre and the Croydon Employment Tribunal at almost the same distance from central Guildford, about 22 miles, and lists them in a different order depending on the postcode. Your notice of hearing will say which applies.
Is Guildford pay above the statutory redundancy cap?
Well above it. The median Guildford job pays more than a hundred pounds a week over the cap (ONS Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings 2025).
Do I need a Guildford employment solicitor?
No. Any qualified lawyer insured for the advice and unconnected to your employer can sign off a settlement agreement — section 203(3A) and (3B) of the Employment Rights Act 1996.
Is notice pay taxed?
Yes, in full, whether you work it or are paid in lieu. Only compensation for losing the job can use the £30,000 threshold.
How long do I have to claim?
Six months from the effective date of termination where that date is on or after 1 October 2026; three months where it was earlier. Acas early conciliation comes first.
