One caution. HMCTS publishes receipts for a region it calls South West, but it no longer publishes which hearing venue belongs to which administrative region — the GOV.UK guidance page that used to list them now redirects to the court finder, and the 2013 Regulations create no regional structure at all. So this is the region of the same geographical name, not a mapping we can show you a source for. Why we say so rather than rounding it off.

Plymouth first, then Cardiff

HMCTS lists no employment venue in Exeter. The nearest its court finder returns for the city centre is Plymouth Magistrates’ Court on St Andrews Street, about thirty-six miles to the south-west. After that the list jumps the Bristol Channel: Cardiff Magistrates’ Court and the Wales Employment Tribunal, at about fifty-five miles on the finder’s straight-line figures, then Port Talbot.

Those are distances as the crow flies, not by road, and they explain why no English venue appears second. For a hearing, the practical answer is the notice: it will say where and when, and whether attendance can be by video. The Plymouth venue in detail.

A round trip to Plymouth for a short preliminary hearing is most of a working day. That is one more reason a settlement agreed before any hearing is worth something to both sides, and why the adviser who signs it off does not need to be anywhere near either city.

Exeter is one of several places on this site whose nearest venue is in a different town. What that changes is travel, not law: the claim, the time limit and the way any award is calculated are identical wherever the hearing is held. If a hearing is listed and the journey is a problem, say so to the tribunal early rather than on the day.

Exeter pay, near the bottom of the site

The median full-time job located in Exeter pays £684 a week, and the median resident earns £678. Only a couple of places on this site have a lower job median. Both figures sit well under the statutory weekly cap of £751 and under the South West median.

Plymouth, whose venue Exeter shares, pays £712: more, but still under the cap. On either city’s figures, the statute uses a typical local week in full, so the statutory column is an honest measure of the week and the case for more has to rest on the claim and on the time it would take to replace the job.

Exeter’s two medians are close, the jobs a few pounds ahead. The two places on this site with a lower job median, Nottingham and Leicester, are both in the East Midlands; of the South West cities here, Exeter has the lowest, below Plymouth, Bournemouth, Bath, Swindon, Cheltenham and Bristol. That spread is wide — Bristol jobs pay well over the cap — so a South West average says little about an Exeter week. Bristol · Bournemouth.

The threshold goes further on Exeter pay

The £30,000 tax threshold covers about ten months of Exeter median pay, among the most on this site. A package of statutory redundancy and a sizeable ex gratia sum can sit wholly under it, leaving only notice pay taxed. How the threshold works.

Take someone of 55 with twenty-five years’ service. The formula stops counting at twenty years, so it gives 27 weeks: £18,473 on the Exeter median. Statutory notice stops at twelve weeks, about £8,210. Long service is where the statutory floor runs out soonest, and where a negotiated sum matters most. Redundancy and settlement agreements.

For unfair dismissal, fifty-two weeks of Exeter median pay is about £35,578, the practical ceiling until 1 January 2027. How the limits work.

Common questions about Exeter

Is there an employment tribunal in Exeter?

HMCTS lists none. The nearest employment venue its court finder returns for central Exeter is Plymouth Magistrates' Court, St Andrews Street, Plymouth PL1 2DP, about thirty-six miles away.

Why does the finder show Cardiff next?

Its distances are straight lines. Cardiff is across the Bristol Channel, about fifty-five miles from Exeter as the crow flies, which puts it ahead of English venues that are closer by road.

Is Exeter pay above the statutory redundancy cap?

No. Both the median Exeter job and the median resident are well under it (ONS Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings 2025).

Does my adviser have to be based in Exeter or Devon?

No. The statute asks for a relevant independent adviser — for example a qualified lawyer — who is insured for the advice and not acting for your employer (Employment Rights Act 1996, section 203(3A)-(3B)). Where their office is does not matter, and the sign-off is usually done remotely.

What is the time limit for an Exeter unfair dismissal claim?

The same as anywhere in England and Wales: for an effective date of termination on or after 1 October 2026 the limit is six months, and for earlier dates three. You must notify Acas for early conciliation before the claim goes in.

Six quick questions. Your details are the last step, never the first.

Step 1 of 6
Where are you up to?

A solicitor needs to know whether there is a document to read yet.

What do you want out of this?

There is no wrong answer. It decides whether a firm books you a sign-off slot or opens a negotiation, and those are different pieces of work.

When have you been asked to sign by?

The Acas Code of Practice recommends at least 10 days. If you have been given less, that is worth a solicitor knowing before anything else.

How long have you worked there?

Length of service decides your statutory notice, whether statutory redundancy pay applies, and whether ordinary unfair dismissal is available to you at all.

Is your employer paying towards the legal advice?

Employers usually contribute, because the agreement is not valid without independent advice. They are not obliged to. Knowing the figure up front stops you being put in front of a firm whose fee does not fit it.

Where should the firm reach you?

This is the only step that asks for personal details.
