Nottingham is home to the only employment tribunal on this site named after the East Midlands — and the lowest median pay of any city here, which puts local wages further under the statutory weekly cap than anywhere else we cover.

Nottingham median weekly pay against the statutory cap Two horizontal bars. The upper bar is median full-time gross weekly pay for jobs located in Nottingham, £672.60. The lower bar is the same measure for Nottingham residents, £633.90. A dashed line marks the statutory weekly cap of £751. Statutory redundancy pay is worked out on a week's pay capped at £751. That is why the statutory figure is a floor rather than a valuation, and why the gap is different in every city.

HMCTS reports this region under the name Midlands, which for Nottingham needs no assumption: the mapping is in the name of the venue itself.

A tribunal named for the region

Most employment tribunal venues are named after the town they sit in. Nottingham’s is named after the region: HMCTS lists it as the Midlands (East) Employment Tribunal, at the Nottingham Justice Centre on Carrington Street. Employment is the only area of law the listing gives it.

The name does a small but useful job on this page. HMCTS publishes tribunal receipts by region without saying which venue belongs to which region, so for most cities here the regional caseload figures come with a caveat. For Nottingham they do not: a venue called Midlands (East) is in the Midlands region by definition.

The listing also has gaps worth knowing about. It gives no building opening hours at all, only telephone hours, and its hearing loop is a portable system that has to be arranged in advance by phone or email. If you need either, ask early rather than on the day.

The most room under the cap of any city here

Nottingham has the lowest median full-time pay of any city on this site, and so the statutory weekly cap sits further above a typical local week here than anywhere else we cover — by more than a tenth of it.

For a redundancy that means the statutory formula takes a typical Nottingham worker’s whole week, with nothing trimmed off. For an unfair dismissal claim it means something less obvious. The compensatory award is capped at the lower of a fixed sum and fifty-two weeks’ pay, and on Nottingham earnings the fifty-two weeks is always the lower figure by a long way. The practical ceiling on a typical local unfair dismissal award is about a year’s pay, not the six-figure number people quote. How the two limits interact.

That is the number a settlement offer here is really being measured against, and it is a reason to look hard at any discrimination or whistleblowing element, where that cap does not apply.

Residents earn less than the jobs pay

Nottingham residents have the lowest median full-time earnings of any city on this site, lower again than the jobs located in the city pay. A good share of the better-paid Nottingham jobs are held by people who commute in.

If that is you, describe your loss with the figure attached to the job, not the one attached to where you live. It is the job you have lost.

The flat £30,000 threshold in section 403 of the Income Tax (Earnings and Pensions) Act 2003 also goes further here than in any other city we cover: measured in months of median local pay, it covers more runway in Nottingham than anywhere else on the site, and around three months more than in London. How the threshold works.

With local pay well under the statutory cap, the statute is not short-changing a typical Nottingham worker; the case for more is built from the claim. What a tribunal could award instead · who pays for the advice.

Common questions about Nottingham

Where is the employment tribunal in Nottingham?

HMCTS lists the Midlands (East) Employment Tribunal at the Nottingham Justice Centre, Carrington Street, Nottingham NG2 1EE. It lists no building opening hours; telephone enquiries are answered Monday to Friday 8:30am to 5pm.

Is there parking at the Nottingham employment tribunal?

HMCTS says NCP car parks are within five minutes' walk, but the site itself has no disabled parking. The nearest disabled parking it names is at Nottingham Station or Broadmarsh car park.

Do I need an employment solicitor in Nottingham for a settlement agreement?

You need a relevant independent adviser: a qualified lawyer, a certified trade union officer or a certified advice centre worker, insured for the advice and not acting for your employer — section 203(3A) of the Employment Rights Act 1996. They do not have to be in Nottingham; the sign-off is routinely done by phone and email.

Nottingham pay is below the statutory cap. What does that change?

The statutory redundancy formula uses a typical local week in full, so it is an honest measure of that part of the loss. And for unfair dismissal, the cap that applies to most Nottingham earners is fifty-two weeks' pay rather than the fixed maximum.

Is Leicester in the same tribunal region?

HMCTS reports both under a region it calls Midlands, but it does not publish which venue belongs to which region. Leicester claims can be heard at the Leicester Tribunal Hearing Centre on New Walk; the notice of hearing will tell you which venue your case is listed at.

Get your agreement checked

Six quick questions. Your details are the last step, never the first.

Step 1 of 6
Where are you up to?

A solicitor needs to know whether there is a document to read yet.

What do you want out of this?

There is no wrong answer. It decides whether a firm books you a sign-off slot or opens a negotiation, and those are different pieces of work.

When have you been asked to sign by?

The Acas Code of Practice recommends at least 10 days. If you have been given less, that is worth a solicitor knowing before anything else.

How long have you worked there?

Length of service decides your statutory notice, whether statutory redundancy pay applies, and whether ordinary unfair dismissal is available to you at all.

Is your employer paying towards the legal advice?

Employers usually contribute, because the agreement is not valid without independent advice. They are not obliged to. Knowing the figure up front stops you being put in front of a firm whose fee does not fit it.

Where should the firm reach you?

This is the only step that asks for personal details.
