Northampton’s claims go to the Bedford Tribunal Hearing Centre, the same venue as Milton Keynes — and Northampton is the closest thing on this site to a balanced labour market: its jobs and its residents earn almost exactly the same.

Northampton median weekly pay against the statutory cap Two horizontal bars. The upper bar is median full-time gross weekly pay for jobs located in Northampton, £729.10. The lower bar is the same measure for Northampton residents, £728.30. A dashed line marks the statutory weekly cap of £751. Statutory redundancy pay is worked out on a week's pay capped at £751. That is why the statutory figure is a floor rather than a valuation, and why the gap is different in every city.

One caution. HMCTS publishes receipts for a region it calls Midlands, but it no longer publishes which hearing venue belongs to which administrative region — the GOV.UK guidance page that used to list them now redirects to the court finder, and the 2013 Regulations create no regional structure at all. So this is the region of the same geographical name, not a mapping we can show you a source for. Why we say so rather than rounding it off.

Same venue as Milton Keynes, the other side of the cap

Northampton has no employment tribunal of its own. The nearest venue the HMCTS court finder returns is the Bedford Tribunal Hearing Centre on Howard Street, about nineteen miles away, with the Leicester Tribunal Hearing Centre second. Bedford is the venue for Milton Keynes too, and the listing — employment and social security only, open 9am to 5pm, level access and lifts, nothing said about parking — is set out on the Milton Keynes page.

The pay is not the same. The median full-time job in West Northamptonshire, the ONS area that contains Northampton, pays £729 a week; the Milton Keynes equivalent is £799. The statutory weekly cap of £751 sits between them. A typical Milton Keynes week is trimmed before the redundancy formula starts; a typical Northampton week is used in full.

Where the case is heard will be on the notice of hearing; HMCTS does not publish which venue takes which cases. Until then the distance is one more reason the statutory sign-off on a settlement agreement is done by phone and email rather than in person.

The most balanced labour market on the site

Across the cities on this site, the gap between what local jobs pay and what local residents earn runs from tens of pounds one way to tens of pounds the other. In West Northamptonshire it is less than a pound: £729 for the median job, £728 for the median resident. No other area here comes close.

That settles a question that is genuinely awkward elsewhere. In Manchester or Coventry it matters whether you commuted in; in Stockport or Milton Keynes it matters whether you commuted out. In Northampton the two local figures tell the same story, so whichever describes you, the statutory arithmetic comes out the same.

It also sits above the East Midlands median, and below the cap — so the statute is not short-changing a typical local worker, and the case for a better settlement has to be built on the claim rather than the arithmetic.

The statutory numbers on a typical Northampton wage

For a 45-year-old with ten complete years, statutory redundancy on the local median is £8,749 — twelve full weeks, with nothing removed by the cap. In Milton Keynes the same person on the local median would get £9,012, not twelve weeks of actual pay, because the cap cuts the week back first.

For unfair dismissal the compensatory award is capped at the lower of £123,543 and fifty-two weeks’ pay; on the Northampton median, fifty-two weeks is about £37,913, the practical ceiling for a typical local earner. How the two limits interact.

The flat £30,000 tax threshold covers more months of Northampton pay than of Milton Keynes pay, so a settlement of the same size goes further here. How the threshold works.

Common questions about Northampton

Is there an employment tribunal in Northampton?

HMCTS lists none in the town. The nearest employment venue its court finder returns for central Northampton is the Bedford Tribunal Hearing Centre, 8-10 Howard Street, Bedford MK40 3HS, open 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday.

Could my hearing be in Leicester instead?

Possibly. The Leicester Tribunal Hearing Centre is the second employment venue the finder returns. HMCTS does not publish which cases go to which venue; the notice of hearing names it.

Is Northampton pay above the statutory cap?

No. The median full-time job in West Northamptonshire pays a little under it, so the statutory redundancy formula uses a typical local week in full.

Do I need a Northampton employment solicitor?

No. The adviser has to be qualified, insured for the advice and not acting for your employer — section 203(3A) and (3B) of the Employment Rights Act 1996 — and can be anywhere in England and Wales. The sign-off is routinely done remotely.

Why does this page use West Northamptonshire figures?

Because the ONS publishes earnings by local authority, and Northampton sits inside the West Northamptonshire unitary authority. There is no separate published figure for the town.

Get your agreement checked

Six quick questions. Your details are the last step, never the first.

Step 1 of 6
Where are you up to?

A solicitor needs to know whether there is a document to read yet.

What do you want out of this?

There is no wrong answer. It decides whether a firm books you a sign-off slot or opens a negotiation, and those are different pieces of work.

When have you been asked to sign by?

The Acas Code of Practice recommends at least 10 days. If you have been given less, that is worth a solicitor knowing before anything else.

How long have you worked there?

Length of service decides your statutory notice, whether statutory redundancy pay applies, and whether ordinary unfair dismissal is available to you at all.

Is your employer paying towards the legal advice?

Employers usually contribute, because the agreement is not valid without independent advice. They are not obliged to. Knowing the figure up front stops you being put in front of a firm whose fee does not fit it.

Where should the firm reach you?

This is the only step that asks for personal details.
