Peterborough has no employment venue, and four sit almost exactly the same distance away — Boston, two in Cambridge and Bedford, all about thirty miles off in three different directions.

Peterborough median weekly pay against the statutory cap Two horizontal bars. The upper bar is median full-time gross weekly pay for jobs located in Peterborough, £729.60. The lower bar is the same measure for Peterborough residents, £710.60. A dashed line marks the statutory weekly cap of £751. Statutory redundancy pay is worked out on a week's pay capped at £751. That is why the statutory figure is a floor rather than a valuation, and why the gap is different in every city.

Four venues, all about thirty miles away

Peterborough has no employment venue of its own, and the HMCTS court finder’s list for the city centre is unusually flat at the top. The nearest is the Boston County Court and Family Court on Norfolk Street in Lincolnshire, about thirty miles to the north-east. Cambridge Magistrates’ Court and the Cambridge County Court and Family Court follow, a fraction of a mile further, to the south-east. The Bedford Tribunal Hearing Centre, to the south-west, is under thirty-two.

Four venues within two miles of each other on the finder’s figures means distance tells you almost nothing about where a Peterborough case would be heard. HMCTS does not publish which venue takes which postcode. The notice of hearing is the only reliable answer. Cambridge.

Boston itself is a county court, listed for five areas of law, open 9am to 4pm. Parking there has to be arranged with the court in advance, and its post goes to Lincoln County Court on the High Street rather than to Boston.

Peterborough is in the East of England on ONS geography, but its nearest venue is in Lincolnshire, which ONS counts as the East Midlands. HMCTS publishes no caseload region named for the East of England, so this page gives no regional figure rather than guess which queue a Peterborough claim would join. None of it affects a settlement: the adviser who signs it off can be anywhere, and Acas early conciliation is run nationally.

Peterborough and Northampton, fifty pence apart

The median full-time job located in Peterborough pays £730 a week. The median job in Northampton pays £729: on ONS figures the two towns are about fifty pence apart, and both sit under the statutory weekly cap of £751. The same figure lands differently in each region: below the East of England median for Peterborough, above the East Midlands median for Northampton.

Peterborough residents earn £711, less than the jobs in the city pay. Cambridge, the nearest city on this site, is in a different bracket altogether: its jobs pay £876, so far above the cap that the statutory formula throws away a large slice of a typical Cambridge week. A Peterborough week goes into the formula whole.

If you commute to Cambridge from Peterborough, the Cambridge figure is closer to your loss than either Peterborough one. Use your own pay.

The gap between Peterborough’s two medians runs the usual way: the jobs located in the city pay about £19 a week more than its residents earn, which suggests some of the better-paid Peterborough jobs are held by people who live outside it. Neither figure comes near the cap, so for a typical local worker the statute takes nothing off the week either way.

What a Peterborough settlement is built from

On the local median, a 45-year-old with ten complete years has a statutory redundancy entitlement of £8,755, worked on the full week. Add ten weeks’ statutory notice under section 86 of the Employment Rights Act 1996, about £7,296, and the floor of a fair package is in place before anything is negotiated.

The £30,000 tax threshold stretches to about nine and a half months of Peterborough median pay. Notice pay is outside it whatever the total. How the threshold works.

For unfair dismissal, a year’s pay on the median is about £37,939, well inside the fixed limit of £123,543, which falls away for dismissals from 1 January 2027. How the limits work.

The figures shrink quickly for a younger worker. At 30 with eight complete years, the formula counts 8 weeks, so statutory redundancy on the Peterborough median is £5,837 and statutory notice is eight weeks. For someone at that stage, how long it would take to find comparable pay usually matters more to the offer than anything in the statutory column. How to negotiate.

Common questions about Peterborough

Is there an employment tribunal in Peterborough?

HMCTS lists none in the city. The nearest employment venue its court finder returns for central Peterborough is the Boston County Court and Family Court, 55 Norfolk Street, Boston PE21 6PE, with two Cambridge courts and the Bedford Tribunal Hearing Centre at almost the same distance.

Where do I send documents?

HMCTS gives Lincoln County Court, 360 High Street, Lincoln LN5 7PS, as the postal address for the Boston court. Check which address a document must reach before posting it.

Is Peterborough pay above the statutory redundancy cap?

No. The median Peterborough job is below it (ONS Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings 2025), so the statutory formula uses a typical local week in full.

Do I need a Peterborough employment solicitor?

No. Any qualified lawyer insured for the advice and unconnected to your employer can sign off a settlement agreement — section 203(3A) and (3B) of the Employment Rights Act 1996.

How long do I have to claim?

Six months from the effective date of termination where that date is on or after 1 October 2026; three months where it was earlier. Acas early conciliation comes first.

Six quick questions. Your details are the last step, never the first.

Step 1 of 6
Where are you up to?

A solicitor needs to know whether there is a document to read yet.

What do you want out of this?

There is no wrong answer. It decides whether a firm books you a sign-off slot or opens a negotiation, and those are different pieces of work.

When have you been asked to sign by?

The Acas Code of Practice recommends at least 10 days. If you have been given less, that is worth a solicitor knowing before anything else.

How long have you worked there?

Length of service decides your statutory notice, whether statutory redundancy pay applies, and whether ordinary unfair dismissal is available to you at all.

Is your employer paying towards the legal advice?

Employers usually contribute, because the agreement is not valid without independent advice. They are not obliged to. Knowing the figure up front stops you being put in front of a firm whose fee does not fit it.

Where should the firm reach you?

This is the only step that asks for personal details.
