Swindon has an employment venue in the town, a magistrates’ court on Princes Street — and Swindon jobs and Swindon residents both earn a few pounds a week over the statutory cap.

Swindon median weekly pay against the statutory cap Two horizontal bars. The upper bar is median full-time gross weekly pay for jobs located in Swindon, £759.50. The lower bar is the same measure for Swindon residents, £758.10. A dashed line marks the statutory weekly cap of £751. Statutory redundancy pay is worked out on a week's pay capped at £751. That is why the statutory figure is a floor rather than a valuation, and why the gap is different in every city.

One caution. HMCTS publishes receipts for a region it calls South West, but it no longer publishes which hearing venue belongs to which administrative region — the GOV.UK guidance page that used to list them now redirects to the court finder, and the 2013 Regulations create no regional structure at all. So this is the region of the same geographical name, not a mapping we can show you a source for. Why we say so rather than rounding it off.

A magistrates’ court on Princes Street

The employment venue the HMCTS court finder returns for central Swindon is Swindon Magistrates’ Court on Princes Street, SN1 2JB. It is listed for four areas of law — crime, employment, social security and the single justice procedure — and open 9am to 4:30pm on weekdays. Letters go to a different address, The Law Courts on Islington Street.

HMCTS lists public parking next to the court, which is not something every venue on this site can say. The hearing enhancement system is portable and has to be arranged in advance by phone or email; there are interview rooms and video link booths.

Behind Swindon the finder’s list is a tie. The Reading Tribunal Hearing Centre and the Bristol Civil and Family Justice Centre are both about thirty-five miles away, a fifth of a mile apart in the finder’s figures. Reading · Bristol. Where a Swindon case is actually listed will be on the notice of hearing.

Swindon is also the nearest employment venue the finder returns for central Cheltenham, more than twenty-five miles north-west, so the same court serves both towns. Cheltenham.

The tie runs across a regional boundary. Swindon is in the South West on ONS geography, and so is Bristol; Reading is in the South East. The caseload figures on this page are the South West’s, the region of the same geographical name, because HMCTS no longer says which venue belongs to which region. If your case went to Reading instead, the queue behind it would be a different one.

Just over the cap, on either measure

The median full-time job located in Swindon pays £760 a week and the median full-time Swindon resident earns £758. The two are less than two pounds apart, one of the closest matches on this site, and both sit a few pounds above the statutory weekly cap of £751.

That makes Swindon an easy place to answer the question of which figure describes a typical local loss: either. It also makes the cap almost irrelevant at the median. It trims roughly one per cent of a Swindon week, against far more in Reading, where jobs pay £954.

Swindon pay sits above the South West median, but below Bristol (£838) and Cheltenham (£810). In the region it is closer to the line than either.

Swindon pay in the statutory sums

For a 45-year-old with ten complete years, the statutory redundancy formula gives £9,012 on the capped Swindon week. On the uncapped median it would be £9,114, so the cap costs a typical Swindon worker about £102 on that calculation — real money, but small next to what is negotiated on top. Redundancy and settlement agreements.

Notice is calculated on the full week, not the capped one: ten weeks’ statutory notice under section 86 of the Employment Rights Act 1996 is about £7,595, all of it taxable as earnings. A year of median pay is about £39,494, the practical ceiling on an unfair dismissal compensatory award until 1 January 2027.

The £30,000 threshold covers a little over nine months of Swindon median pay. How the threshold works.

At the top of the scale the cap shows a little more. A 60-year-old with twenty years — the most service the formula counts — is owed 29.5 weeks: £22,154 on the capped Swindon week, about £251 less than on the real median. Even there the cap takes around one per cent. In Swindon the argument for a bigger settlement is about the claim and the job market, not the statute.

A typical Swindon week loses only a few pounds to the cap, so the statutory formula is close to the real week. What a tribunal could award · the time limit.

Send an enquiry

Six quick questions. Your details are the last step, never the first.

Step 1 of 6
Where are you up to?

A solicitor needs to know whether there is a document to read yet.

What do you want out of this?

There is no wrong answer. It decides whether a firm books you a sign-off slot or opens a negotiation, and those are different pieces of work.

When have you been asked to sign by?

The Acas Code of Practice recommends at least 10 days. If you have been given less, that is worth a solicitor knowing before anything else.

How long have you worked there?

Length of service decides your statutory notice, whether statutory redundancy pay applies, and whether ordinary unfair dismissal is available to you at all.

Is your employer paying towards the legal advice?

Employers usually contribute, because the agreement is not valid without independent advice. They are not obliged to. Knowing the figure up front stops you being put in front of a firm whose fee does not fit it.

Where should the firm reach you?

This is the only step that asks for personal details.
